Last year, the Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) and American Trucking Associations (ATA) reminded everyone of just how many goods are moved in preparation for the Super Bowl. They added up how many truckloads it took to move four of the most common game-time snacks consumed across the country:
- 5 million pounds of popcorn = 100 truckloads
- 28 million pounds of potato chips = 350 truckloads
- 5 million avocados = 668 truckloads
- 1 billion chicken wings = 1,562 truckloads
That’s a total of 2,680 truckloads delivering for just four common party items – not to mention one giant tummy ache!
Here are some more telling numbers for all you stats junkies: Trucks move roughly 71% of the nation’s freight by weight, including most of those delectables you’ll be chomping on the day of the big game. In 2018, Americans spent about $15.3B on the Super Bowl, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), and whether they were buying food, beverages or a brand new big screen, the products required a big shipping strategy to go from manufacturers into the waiting hands of consumers.
The NRF estimates that 45 million people host Super Bowl parties, and that the breakdown of retail goods purchased, according to surveys, are:
- 82% will purchase food and beverages
- 11% will buy athletic wear, decorations & accessories
- 8% will splurge on new televisions
Football and logistics are a similar sport
Like football, logistics is a highly strategical game. To come out on top, you need a great game plan.
Each year, truckers will travel about 287.9 billion miles on the nation’s roads. That’s over 5 trillion football fields, end zone to end zone, if you’re keeping count, and the coordination of these movements requires quite a bit of Xs and Os. The routes receivers take when going out for passes are no mistake, and neither are the routes trucks take to quickly deliver goods to nearly 3.8 million retail establishments across the US.
Some of the greatest players won’t be wearing helmets
As you and over 100 million Americans gear up to watch Super Bowl LIII, don’t forget about the critical game planning of supply chain management, the truck drivers who delivered the goods, or the logistics team who designed the routes. Winning always takes a team effort.
