Backed by 60 years of experience, our client manufactures specialty commercial building products for building owners, contractors and subcontractors. By delivering ten extensive product lines directly to construction sites worldwide, this major industry player makes things a whole lot easier for architects and other building professionals. What they needed was a partner to help make things easier for them, too.

The challenge

Our client’s highly specialized products are oversized, awkwardly shaped, fragile, and of exceptional value, making their freight both costly and especially susceptible to damage. Space constraints, warehouse inefficiency and dock congestion were also of major concern. Standard-sized boxes that could be neatly organized on pallets and loaded into trailers were simply not in the cards.

The company’s major goal was to balance packaging, shipping and operations expenses with the possibility of freight damage. Working with very short lead times and delivering directly to construction sites around the world, they also needed international shipping that was fast and affordable.

The King solution

We set out to design a cost-effective solution that could accurately quote freight, protect it against damage, and provide the most efficient mode of global transportation. Our team started by researching our client’s purchasing, logistics, manufacturing and sales operations to formulate a unique transportation program that would optimize their business. Our solution featured customized online tools, warehousing equipment, IT services, auditing, SOPs and more.

King executed on a new set of processes enabling our client to:

Develop pricing and fulfillment solutions that included unique onsite label printing, multi-picks per day and consolidating freight at King’s dock.

Achieve consistency by cultivating relationships with third party vendors.

Create greater efficiencies and accuracy with quoting, production, packaging and shipping by building shipments based on exact product specifications.

Reduce damage issues by transporting more product via partial-load consolidation (PTL).

Provide real-time data available in custom IT tools.

Resolve lengthy claims and auditing processes.

Work through claims issues, create pricing efficiencies and introduce new Dimensionalizer and SPAQ solutions.

Reduce manual labor and costs.

The results

After one and a half years of implementing the new transportation program, including multiple iterations of customized transportation, claims resolution, and IT programs, King Solutions was able to maximize efficiency and keep the client on the cutting edge of the marketplace, all while minimizing their overall transportation spend.

Additionally, we improved efficiencies for our client by shipping products with immediate transit requirements while storing products that were not time sensitive. This alleviated the dock space issue for our client, greatly increasing dock loading and unloading speeds.
